Business isn’t just about making money.

Business is not for the faint of heart.

Anyone who goes into business thinking it will be an easy way to make some fast money is foolish and mistaken. There are hard times and harder work. Being an entrepreneur is more than a job; it’s a lifestyle.

There are hundreds of reasons to start a business. Maybe you wanted to make people’s lives easier. Or you wanted to wake up every day and be excited to go to work. Following your passion may have been the best decision you’ve ever made. Or maybe you just wanted to make your own hours and be your own boss.

Whatever your reason for taking the plunge, it doesn’t make it any easier.

Being an entrepreneur is hard. You do more than just eat, sleep and breathe your business because let’s be honest, you don’t have time to sleep and you definitely forget to eat on occasion. Vacations are basically off the table. There’s no guarantee that you’ll ever retire. There’s never enough staff, you’re always the last one to get paid, and sometimes it seems like you don’t really see your family for months at a time.

There’s lots of bad reasons to start a company. But there’s only one good, legitimate reason, and I think you know what it is: it’s to change the world.
Phil Libin, CEO of Evernote

So what’s the point?

Why spend all that time and energy? Why pour every penny you have into something that might amount to nothing when you could go out and find a job that offers the comfort of 9-5, a regular salary and vacation time?

Part of it is the thrill of the chase. That rush you get when you sign your first client or get your first good review. The idea that maybe one day, you’ll make it big and you’ll live like a king.

But more than that, it’s about leaving something behind. We want to be remembered for doing something of value. We want to make it into the history books, and we want to leave something our children can be proud of.

You leave your family with more than just a pile of money and objects you accumulated over the course of your life. Instead, you leave them with an opportunity. They can take your business and run with it, building off your legacy. They have the chance to be their own bosses and provide for generations of your family.

Sure, we want to live like kings. But we also want to let our children live like kings, without the struggle we had to go through. We want our names to matter; we want to build something that matters. We want to leave this world a little better than it was when we got here.

If you went into business just for the money, you might be a fool. But if you did it to leave something behind and make the world a better place, it’s a noble effort.

Good luck.
